Friday Freestyle Report 03 'Bars and Bass'

This is Fred, he represents the Bronx. Rapping is easy for him. What follows is part one of a session 'Bars On I-95' dropped a few days ago. I imagine part two is going to be where the real action is. This particular segment weighs in at just over three minutes during which Fred The Godson treats you to some light bars that show exactly how easy this is for him. You can tell Caes was excited to introduce him and hear what he was going to say.

A new contender to the world of online freestyle platforms is 'Don't Flop Entertainment' starting off their freestyle series with Fred The Godson. The production quality is very good as they are no strangers to content creation. Whether they have the ear for consistent elite level freestyle selection remains to be seen.

One of the hot topics in the battle world right now is the recent defeat of veteran Jae Millz at the hands of KShine of NWX. Millz had a solid first round with many, including Millz himself, feeling he won that round. Personally, I had Millz for the first round. Some say it's open to debate. A few days later KShine touches down at Flex and we get some mean battle bars from the artist whom the majority says smoked Millz 3-0.

Once again Connecticut is the building with Danbury representer Man-U-Ill and man does he have 'the hunger'. It's evident in this very well produced session from 'Bars On I-95' and also in his session on the Red Room Freestyle #05. Nowadays I don't want to listen to anybody's album. I'd rather hear a freestyle over something that is not a trap beat. With the majority of my rap diet consisting of freestyles Man-U-Ill is the type of artist who helps keep my daily bar count up.

'High Off Life TV' just posted a cypher with some their top spitters and each mc takes the baton and runs further with it than the man before him. Whoever selected the order of the rotation got it right. The average level of emceeing here is good but it is definitely years behind the standard level of talent you tend to get with Flex. Although the production aspect of their content is exceptional they simply are not turning in the level of sessions that 'Bars On I-95' is. Even with that said their content is growing on me and they are certainly worthy of being contenders. With a few minor tweaks I could see 'High Off Life TV' becoming an elite level platform for online freestyle content. The online freestyle scene is really starting to take shape these days.

'High Off Life TV' has another freestyle you should definitely not miss and that is the one featuring Naj Murph. And yes I did see the Headkrack freestyle however I found it to be a little underwhelming compared to other times I have heard him.

BBC Radio 1Xtra puts out a monthly one minute freestyle session with the rapper kicking rhymes on a local bus called 'Buss Bars'. The concept is interesting. Toddla T makes a beat and then the emcee gets open on said beat while riding the local bus through the part of town they came up in. A back to your roots sort of session. Of the three episodes I found available they were all good and beautifully shot. Nothing wrong with having a budget folks. Since they are barely over a minute here's all three.

If you are not up on Charlie Sloth already he runs a freestyle session on BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra called 'Fire In The Booth' during which he hosts with a level of energy and personality that is very unique to him. Sometimes I feel he chats too much and sometimes his hand gets a little heavy on those effects however his personal story is inspiring and encouraging. First up is Nasty C with the most recent 'Fire In The Booth' performance.

The usual suspects in this line up go by names like Skibadee, Eksman, Harry Shotta, Dreps, Azza and Grima. This particular segment is from a 2016 drum n bass special but these participants are still very active and absolutely worth knowing. Charlie barely even talks during this one.

I'm going to give you three session from Charlie Sloth and the last one will be the time Drake was on 'Fire In The Booth' and you can see for yourself how the worlds biggest rapper stacks up against other guests on the same show. This next one is from Token and I endorse this emcee.

Just because you're the biggest doesn't mean you're the best. Life is funny like that. Most popular doesn't always go to the one with the most skill. Sometimes the bad guy gets the girl and hard work doesn't always get you the biggest paycheck. This freestyle from Drake was not as embarrassing as I had anticipated it to be. It definitely wasn't that bullshit he pulled on Tim Westwood back in the day.

There's no way this thing is getting closed out on some Drake shit. Enjoy this piece from 'Showoff Radio'. Peace.

Friday Freestyle Report 04 Bars and Blunts

The cats over at 'Bars On I-95' have come through two weeks in a row with exceptional female talent. Ms. Hustle runs with the baton Lady Luck passed off last week as A.B. and Cease continue curating what will one day be a legendary list of freestyle performances. Ms.Hustle is hard and brings to the table an aggressiveness that is not present in a lot of male emcees. Ms Hustle is right at home on the home of the heavy spitters. I would have liked to hear a little bit more from her.   'Bars On I-95'...Thank you for this one. This one impressed with instant classic status. Other female emcees would be wise to take a lot of notes here. Any emcee in general could learn something here. Now I'm wondering if the rest of that Fred The Godson will be better than this. I don't think it will be. This is Lady London spitting all bars and no bullshit on 'Bars On I-95' home of the heavy talkers and she fit right in. I didn't know Lady London would be t...

So you want to be a Dj?

Even today in 2018 it still seems like everyone wants to be a dj. Some truly want to study the craft and become part of the culture while a large portion of these alleged knowledge seekers are infatuated with money, fame and potential affection from women with poor judgement in men and bad taste in music. But for those who truly seek the path to higher levels of turntable enlightenment Rob Swift and his Brolic Army are here for you.     In 2014 Swift began teaching a course called 'Dj Skills & Styles' as a professor at the New School for Liberal Arts in New York City. During the course students use turntables and vinyl to learn the fundamentals of mixing, scratching and beat juggling. With only twelve student per class each semester you are damn near getting one on one time with one of the most respected and experienced turntablist on the planet. If you are like me and desire to battle then this right here might be exactly what you are look...
