Friday Freestyle Report 01

It's Friday night and you're looking for some music to listen to but you're not sure what. That's what 'The Smoking Section' is here for. All you need to worry about is grabbing something to smoke and maybe a beverage of some sort. I like IPA's myself. First up on the list is a freestyle from Ciroc Studios at Hot 97, home of Funk Flex, in NYC. Not everybody can come up here. That's the mantra. Flex has a respectable thing going on and when you tune in you can catch freestyles from some of the more established or mainstream names in the game as well as seasoned battle rap veterans that you don't know but will definitely enjoy. Most guests get on the mic and hold it down however there were a few times when the performances were trash. Examples of those exceptions would be the appearances by Quentin Miller (aside from being wack he sounded like he was whispering), Juice Wrld (I thought his freestyle was bad until I heard some of his recorded music), the second appearance of G Herbo (Herbo's first time passing through was real nice though) and that time Maino kept fucking up his bars. In this episode we are graced with performances from veteran Styles P and newer school torch carrier Dave East. Out of these two I was feeling the Dave East bars more so than what we got from Styles P.

Battle rapper DNA of NWX fame passes through Ciroc Studios and gives you two rounds of bars you'll be repeating for months. Or maybe that was just me. DNA has presence on the mic and prowess with his pen. This is definitely one freestyle I tend to keep on my phone (YouTube Premium lets you download if you didn't know) for those moments when I need a quick bar fix. This was a smooth and even beautiful performance from a literal top level bar spitter. If you like what you hear you can check out DNA in action on URL TV the most respected mc battle arena. His first round in his battle against JC has been regarded as legendary by some. I saw it for myself and that first round was incredible.

Representing out of the Bronx we have a freestyle from battle hardened battle rapper Goodz via A.B. and Cease, the cats behind 'Bars On I-95'. Shout out Connecticut. 'Bars On I-95' is bringing quality content that is worth the very short time it takes to subscribe to their YouTube account. It's the home of the heavy spitters. Goodz delivers the goods while dropping jewels of wisdom throughout this very laid back performance. This mc exudes confidence, experience and finesse. And it looks very easy to him.

Goodz delivery is good enough for another serving so let's dip back to Ciroc Studios and check out Freestyle #50 from Funk Flex featuring Goodz and fellow battle rapper T-Top (check out NOME 7 to see their battle) from North Carolina. Honestly I'm only posting this one because of the bars from Goodz. T-Top flopped. He didn't have the goods to fuck with Goodz. The shit was a bit embarrassing to watch, I felt bad for the guy. However I can honestly say I don't know what the fuck he was thinking going up there unprepared. If anybody should have known better he should have. T-Top had confidence but what he didn't have was bars. Fucking shame.

Out of all the freestyles in this Friday's report this next spitter is my absolute favorite. When Millyz raps you feel him. I want this cat to make it without being ruined by the mainstream industry. He recently did an album with Statik Selektah that is worth spending money on. If the fellas at 'Bars On I-95' are reading this let me say that Millyz is the artist I want to see on your platform the most. And DNA too. We're going to get into a few freestyles from Millyz and they are all worth your time. This first video is an excerpt from a session on 'Sway In The Morning'. Nothing against Kyah Baby but her shit was weak as fuck compared to Millyz. You can see her struggle and him get down if you look up the full length video. He even killed a trap beat in the full version. Unless your taste in rap is just completely fucked Millyz will make you a believer. If you're wondering who has cosigned him, think Jadakiss. You can't talk about artist who paint pictures with words without talking about Millyz. To do so shows a lack of understanding.

You can thank Cosmic Kev from Power 99 FM in Philly for this next one right here. When you're looking for freestyles Cosmic Kev is a name you should definitely check for. His session with Young MA is another good one.

It just keeps getting better when Millyz is concerned.

This next one is the first freestyle of Millyz that I heard. This is what put him on my radar and made me seek out more. Freestyle #40 from Funk Flex. And if you haven't figured out where Millyz is from he represents out of Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This last one pairs Millyz with the almighty Statik Selektah who was described by Funk Flex as the younger brother of Dr. Dre and Dj Premier if they had a little brother.

In the state of Massachusetts there is something special going on with rap. This joint here is hosted by Bootleg Kev of REAL 92.3 in Los Angeles. Both of these boys were on tour promoting their joint album at the time of this recording. Consider this one a treat.

Last but not least we are closing out with the freestyle New Jersey battle rapper Tsu Surf laid down on 'Bars On I-95' when he came home. If you're not familiar with rapper Tsu Surf look up his battle against Rum Nitty. You want to see the whole thing but you really want to see the part where started talking all that X-Men and Dragon Ball Z shit. This particular freestyle racked up over 2 million views for 'Bars On I-95' making it their most viewed video to date.

All of their content that I have seen so far completely deserves the views and support.  Catch you cats next week. Big up 'Bars On I-95'. Shout out Connecticut.

Friday Freestyle Report 04 Bars and Blunts

The cats over at 'Bars On I-95' have come through two weeks in a row with exceptional female talent. Ms. Hustle runs with the baton Lady Luck passed off last week as A.B. and Cease continue curating what will one day be a legendary list of freestyle performances. Ms.Hustle is hard and brings to the table an aggressiveness that is not present in a lot of male emcees. Ms Hustle is right at home on the home of the heavy spitters. I would have liked to hear a little bit more from her.   'Bars On I-95'...Thank you for this one. This one impressed with instant classic status. Other female emcees would be wise to take a lot of notes here. Any emcee in general could learn something here. Now I'm wondering if the rest of that Fred The Godson will be better than this. I don't think it will be. This is Lady London spitting all bars and no bullshit on 'Bars On I-95' home of the heavy talkers and she fit right in. I didn't know Lady London would be t...

So you want to be a Dj?

Even today in 2018 it still seems like everyone wants to be a dj. Some truly want to study the craft and become part of the culture while a large portion of these alleged knowledge seekers are infatuated with money, fame and potential affection from women with poor judgement in men and bad taste in music. But for those who truly seek the path to higher levels of turntable enlightenment Rob Swift and his Brolic Army are here for you.     In 2014 Swift began teaching a course called 'Dj Skills & Styles' as a professor at the New School for Liberal Arts in New York City. During the course students use turntables and vinyl to learn the fundamentals of mixing, scratching and beat juggling. With only twelve student per class each semester you are damn near getting one on one time with one of the most respected and experienced turntablist on the planet. If you are like me and desire to battle then this right here might be exactly what you are look...
